What is Medical Acupuncture?
Medical Acupuncture is a technique that involves inserting thin monofilament needles into specific points across the body for therapeutic and preventative purposes. It comes from ancient Chinese medicine and in western society is considered a form of complementary or alternative medicine. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in muscles. This stimulation effects the central nervous system and releases natural chemicals, like pain-relieving endorphins, into the muscles, spinal cord and brain.
You may feel a tingling or dull ache when the needles are inserted but you should not feel any significant pain.
Medical acupuncture has better effects with multiple sessions however can be used as a single treatment. An initial session can last anything from 20 minutes to an hour as an assessment (including medical history and physical examination) of your condition is undertaken before any insertion of needles. Treatment times after the initial session can vary depending on your condition.
